Our Coffees: Nicaragua - Plan vivo

Region Info: jinotega

The Jinotega region in Nicaragua’s northern highlands is one of the country’s most important coffee-growing areas. At elevations between 1,000 and 1,700 meters, Arabica coffee thrives under ideal conditions: fertile volcanic soil, a mild climate, and abundant rainfall. Jinotega’s coffee is renowned for its full-bodied flavor with notes of chocolate, caramel, and gentle fruit acidity.

The region is shaped by small-scale farmers, many of whom employ sustainable farming methods. Coffee is not only economically vital but also culturally significant. Visitors can experience the entire coffee-making process on local farms, from cherry picking to roasting.

Beyond coffee, Jinotega boasts stunning natural landscapes, including cloud forests, waterfalls, and the Apanás Lake, offering various outdoor activities. Jinotega uniquely blends tradition, nature, and premium coffee production.

History of coffee in nicaragua

Coffee was introduced to Nicaragua in the late 1700s, by missionaries and colonists, and by the late 19th century it became the country’s main export. Although a long history of political unrest, civil war and recent natural disasters have challenged the country, Nicaragua continues to produce coffee as its main crop for trade.

Nicaragua’s sheer size offers a diverse array of microclimates that, when combined with the numerous varietals cultivated there, produce a range of cup profiles. The most notable regions for coffee production are Jinotega, Matagalpa and Nueva Segovia, but coffee also grows in the lesser-known Estelí and Madriz.

Additionally, the majority of coffee cultivated in Nicaragua is shade grown using organic farming practices. The country has become well known for producing high-quality Fairtrade and Organic coffees.

Flavour Profile

"As far as i am concerned, you cannot beat central American coffees… And this Nicaragan is no exception. It’s got that rich, fruitiness that really stands out but with a smooth and delicate finish. As a single origin it has a real wow factor, and it helps push my Signature Blend to the next level." - Kieran, Head Roaster
